5 track ep. yamahas dx series of synthesizers has long been a source of inspiration for tom trago. the dx7, in particular, appeals to the dutch producer thanks to a unique sound that he describes as glassy but classic and icy. 34 years after it went on sale the same year as trago was born, interestingly the synthesizer’s sound still bristles with futurist appeal. trago, who was partially trained in how to use the dx7 by studio friends bok bok, sterac electronics and juju and jordash, has decided to pay tribute to this most distinctive of synthesizers by using it as inspiration for serene waters, his first ep for voyage direct since 2014 epic hidden heart of gold.

the independent, south african record label mushroom hour half hour presents open letter to adoniah, the moving albums by talented guitarist and songwriter sibusile xaba, who improvises the musical legacy of kwazulu-natal into an exciting, genreless future!

weiss blasts off via “brain fever”, where raw, mind-altering arpeggio bass, fuzzy drum machine hits, spacey chords and alien electronics thrust our hero skywards. think of it as techno for funk-fuelled, italo-disco loving astronauts whose journey to the end of the universe is only just underway. this intergalactic funk blueprint is explored further on the deeper and more melodious “you want a cigarette”, where weiss’s vocoder vocals wrap themselves around mutant tb-303 lines, rush-inducing chords and clattering machine percussion. on “space ghetto (booty)”, our hero celebrates the discovery of previously unknown worlds in the only way he knows how. with kaleidoscopic, full-throttle electronic motifs and funk-fuelled synth-bass to the fore, weiss offers his own unique take on electrofunk. pleasingly fuzzy and tightly wrapped in the syncopated drum machine handclaps of ghetto-house, it’s a typically far-sighted and attractive proposition.

south african house and synth-funk from the kwaito era by the legendary senyaka kekana. the unexpected deep house jam bayanyonyoba (1993) and the illustrious soul song dont judge me bad (1987) are big rh favorites. original copies are absolutely impossible to find, now released on 12inch for the first time. beautiful sleeve by stenze quo! esa williams i had the pleasure of performing alongside senyaka at the alexander theatre, johannesburg back in 2012 which would have probably been his last most iconic gig before his passing in 2015. these two tracks really showcase the sounds of south africa around the early to late 80’s, the influences from american synth pop and house that would then lead later into many of these records being played at the wrong speed which ultimately became the original kwaito sound from south africa

after delivering the fh05, label co-owner pablo tarno is back at the controls with the fh09. the a-side features the more clubby cuts, ranging from the broken beat and dramatic jazzy piano chords of “horizons” to the more driving house beat and playful synth melody of ‘gunkan”. the b-side is all about the laidback grooves, “bitchplease” is a heavy dubby bass affair with serene pads that will lighten any mood, while “preemo” brings back pablo’s deep trip hop roots, closing off the record with a classy slowed-down number.

dope archival release of steve rachmads long time side project where he exposes the more funk / electro side of his talents. this is musical machine-head side of the amsterdam electro scene (also purveyed buy the likes of comtron). dense undertones of cybotron/ model 500 on this one. top notch productions from a dutch master. check!

transit records 005, -without end hours“, comes loaded with phat, but definitely distinct dancefloor bangers that take the title of the ep quite literally. they cover a full night (and day) out in the club, and range from dark, technoish house („when your groove is mine-), over uplifting re-interpretations of classic house anthems (-without end hours-), and dystopian tech-house (negativ dekadent remix), through to sizzling after hour house (zuckermann remix). ryoma sasaki’s originals show his love for classic electronic music blueprints and how he is able to turn them creatively into something compellingly fresh and contemporary. it feels like listening (and dancing) to something you know, but not from the past, more so from the now. and while they wonderfully work in that now of the night, negativ dekadent turns this familiar feeling into an uneasiness with the future, only to make you forget about it in the abyss of his beats and overwhelming synth patterns just before the morning breaks. finally, zuckermann fully beams you into the slightly distorted new world you might find yourself in anyway at 11 am on a beautiful sunny morning on one of those (berlin) dancefloors.
